Endangered Instrument Scholars at SMS

We are delighted to announce the new SMS Endangered Instrument Scholarships, starting in September 2021. The endangered instruments are the trombone, French horn, tuba, euphonium, oboe, bassoon, double bass and viola.

There will be a limited number of scholarships available, and we are currently looking to recruit scholars to start lessons on the following instruments from September:

  • Double bass
  • Trombone
  • Viola

These scholarships will provide pupils with the opportunity to start to learn an ensemble instrument that they may not otherwise have the chance to learn. The scholarships would especially suit piano or keyboard students looking to start a second instrument, allowing them to experience the social aspects of group music-making. Scholars are expected to take advantage of our free Theory and Aural classes and join an SMS ensemble after one or two terms.

Scholars would receive a one-year scholarship that includes:

  • Free instrument hire
  • Free small group lessons at Wednesday or Saturday Music Academy
  • Free SMS Ensemble membership, with the expectation of compulsory attendance and progression through the appropriate ensembles.

Who can apply?

Children and young people who:

  • attend a state-funded school in the London Borough of Sutton
  • are in Key Stage 2 or 3.
  • are not currently learning an endangered instrument.

We particularly welcome applications from students who already receive piano/keyboard lessons.
